State Europe School of Berlin (SESB) -

Bilingual and bicultural education German/English at Schiller-Gymnasium

As part of Schiller-Gymnasium the Öffnet einen internen Link im aktuellen FensterSESB enjoys the use of the rich resources available to our grammar school – for example, freshly renovated, colourful classrooms, modern science labs, excellent media resources, a landscaped school yard, a cafeteria offering healthy food.

However, the SESB pupils have an extra advantage – namely half their subjects (i.e. Geography, History, Social Studies, Information Technology, Öffnet einen internen Link im aktuellen FensterBiology, Music and of course English) are taught in English.

Approximately half of the pupils and teachers are native speakers of the partner-language, be it English or German. The combination of pupils and parents from an international background and active, dynamic staff coming from Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, the US and Canada provides the perfect link between language and culture. Both German and English are taught at native- and partner-language levels in Years 7 and 8. From Year 9 on our pupils take part in lessons at a native speaker standard as a matter of course.

As in so many English-speaking countries presentations, projects and independent work play an essential role in developing the pupils’ organisational and academic skills. As a result, we have been a forerunner in teaching pupils the skills they require for the new Berlin curriculum.

At the upper level, most subjects offered up to year 10 in the SESB are offered at pass or honours level in the respective language. In the SESB Abitur, two or three exam subjects can be examined through the medium of English.

The English language is not just limited to the classroom. Our debating club has won the Berlin-Brandenburg debating competition at the British Embassy. Our pupils regularly win first prize in the regional and national rounds of the annual Federal Foreign Language Competition. Our English Language Theatre Group has just staged their latest play.  Of course, all the other activities of Schiller Gymnasium are available for the SESB pupils, as well, as are the numerous school exchanges.
