What are the special features of the Europe School?
- Approximately half of the pupils and teachers are native speakers of the partner-language, be it English or German.
- Half of the subjects (i.e. Geography, History, Civics, Political Science, Information Technology, Biology, Music and of course English) are taught in English.
- Both German and English are taught at native- and partner-language levels in Years 7 and 8 and at native-language level from Year 9 onwards.
- IT is compulsory in Year 7 and is combined with Biology so that the pupils learn to integrate their computer skills with school subjects.
- Physics and Chemistry (taught through German) are offered as a combined subject in year 7 and 8 to emphasise the shared skills between the Sciences.
- In Year 7 French is continued (begun in Year 5). In Year 8 pupils opt for an additional subject in one of the following areas: Latin or Italian, additional Art/Music or Science.
Collaborations and In House Training of Teaching Staff
Teachers at the SESB (and Schiller) attend special programs such as PSE training and conflict resolution, but also attend conferences and training for bilingual education outside Berlin organised by LISUM (Bremen, Colchester in the UK, Bilingual Biology in Kassel) as well as the LISUM seminars in Berlin. Even with 30 or so schools in Berlin using English as a language of instruction for other subjects, the SESB is unique in being the Berliner State Gymnasium with a comprehensive English- German native speaker profile leading up to Yr 12.
Teachers from the SESB at Schiller and the Sophie-Charlotte Gymnasium have made mutual class- observations and exchanged teaching materials to share the best techniques and methods for teaching subjects such as biology, English, geography and history, bilingually (English-German/German-English).
